A welding technique in which the arc force or gun is directed opposite to the progress of welding.

The term backhand technique is sometimes referred to as the "pull gun technique" in GMAW (gas metal arc welding) and in FCAW (flux-cored arc welding).

Soudage à gauche. Le chalumeau progresse régulièrement sans déplacements latéraux. La baguette est plongée à intervalles réguliers dans le bain. On ne peut souder ainsi à plat que des tôles dont l'épaisseur ne dépasse pas 4 mm, sinon le métal fondu, trop abondant, s’effondre par gravité. On peut remédier à cet inconvénient en plaçant à l'aide d’un support, les tôles en position oblique; le mouvement se faisant suivant le remontée, la pesanteur fait alors glisser le métal fondu sur le point de soudure précédent ce qui le renforce. Pour des épaisseurs supérieures à 10 mm, on soude en deux passes successives.
