On ne peut souder ainsi à plat que des tôles dont l'épaisseur ne dépasse pas 4 mm, sinon le métal fondu, trop abondant, s’effondre par gravité. On peut remédier à cet inconvénient en plaçant à l'aide d’un support, les tôles en position oblique; le mouvement se faisant suivant le remontée, la pesanteur fait alors glisser le métal fondu sur le point de soudure précédent ce qui le renforce. Pour des épaisseurs supérieures à 10 mm, on soude en deux passes successives.
