Fixing baths are used in photographic processing to remove the unwanted silver compounds left in films, plates and prints after development. Sodium Thiosulphate (hypo) is used (dissolved in water) and an acid fixer is generally made up. This is either via Pot. Metabisulphite, or an acid (generally Acetic) together with Sod. L'argent présent dans les fixateurs usagés peut être récupéré en le précipitant par le zinc ou par un dérivé de l'urée, la guanidine. De même par le sulfure ou l'hydrosulfite de sodium. En général, la récupération se fait par électrolyse. On fait passer un courant électrique dans le bain à régénérer où se trouvent plongées des cathodes et des anodes sous tension de 0, 5 volt, cette tension variant selon le procédé choisi et l'importance de l'installation.
