Weighing gauges are most useful in areas with frequent snow, since they measure any form of precipitation simply by weighing on a balance whatever falls into a pail. The downward motion of the pail as it fills with precipitation is transmitted to a recording chart on a clock-turned drum. Many of these gauges are equipped with a funnel which can be removed to permit the snow to fall directly into the pail. If accuracy of the snowfall measurements is important, the gauge should, of course, be shielded. 5, record 2, English, - weighing%20rain%20gauge
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The two types of automatic rain gages used in the County are weighing buckets and tipping buckets. Most of the rainfall records in the County are collected with weighing bucket gages. A weighing bucket consists of a collection bucket for receiving and storing the precipitation, a weighing device for measurement, and an indicating dial to display, in inches, precipitation gathered by the collector. The weighing bucket mechanically converts the depth of accumulated precipitation during a given period (5 or 15 minutes), to a code disk position. This code disk position is recorded on punched paper tape at the selected intervals. 8, record 2, English, - weighing%20rain%20gauge

5, record 2, French, - pluviographe%20%C3%A0%20pes%C3%A9e

1. The measuring instrument can either indicate directly the value of the quantity measured: "direct reading instrument" (e.g. ammeter, aneroid manometer ...), or indicate only that the value of the quantity measured is equal to a known value of the same quantity: "comparison instrument" (e.g. equal-arm balance, null-detecting galvanometer ...), or permit the measurement of a small difference between the value of the quantity measured and a known value of the same quantity: "differential instrument" (e.g. optical indicator of a length comparator ...). 2. Most measuring instruments comprise a measuring sequence in which the quantity measured is transformed into a quantity perceptible to an observer (a length, angle ...). 3. Measuring instruments can include elements serving additional or accessory functions (e.g. automatic regulation, signalling ...). 4. Measuring instruments intended to measure certain defined quantities are given special names instead of the general title "measuring instruments" ... 4, record 3, English, - measuring%20instrument

measuring instrument ("active") and material measure ("passive" measuring instrument): The general classification of measuring instruments ... is difficult to translate unambiguously since, although the French term "instrument de mesurage" corresponds exactly to the English term "measuring instrument," there is no English term corresponding to the French term "appareil mesureur" which is apparently confined to instruments incorporating transducers. The term "material measure" is acceptable in English ..., when there is particular need to avoid ambiguity in referring to a device of the "passive" type [and] the word "active" has been added in brackets, for clarification, to the term "measuring instrument." 4, record 3, English, - measuring%20instrument
