CONT

Passive microwave radiometers can be grouped into two categories: conical scanning radiometers and cross-track scanning radiometers. A passive microwave radiometer is considered a conical scanning radiometer when the footprint size and earth incidence angle remain unchanged across the scan line, while a cross-track scanning radiometer has varying footprint size and earth incidence angle across the scan line.

OBS

Conical scanning radiometers are characterized by a continuous instrument calibration, with the sensors passing, at every rotation, below two calibration sources: a cold-sky reflector ... and an on-board calibration target (OBCT) which provides a hot temperature reference.

The AATSR instrument is an imaging radiometer primarily designed to measure global Sea Surface Temperature (SST) to the high levels of accuracy and stability required for climate research and modelling.

CONT

The AATSR (Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer) instrument has been successfully launched on board the ENVISAT spacecraft on 1st March 2002 at 01:07 GMT from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana.

CONT

DEF

In tracking radar, a method of angular tracking in which the direction of the main lobe of the antenna pattern is slightly offset from the axis of the antenna.

OBS

In weather radar, the name is sometimes applied to horizontal scanning because the surface swept in space by the beam as the antenna rotates in azimuth with fixed elevation angle, is a cone.

OBS

Such scanning may be either rotating or nutating, according as the direction of polarization rotates or remains unchanged.

OBS

conical scanning: term officially approved by the RADARSAT-2 Terminology Approval Group (RTAG).

OBS

The Bragg Crystal Spectrometer (BCS) is designed to study plasma heating and dynamics during the impulsive phase of solar flares. It consists of two bent crystal spectrometers, BCS-A and BCS-B, that observe the H-like line complex of Fe XXVI, and He-like complexes of Fe XXV, Ca XIX and S XV. Each spectrometer consists of a double detector placed behind a pair of germanium crystals that diffract the incoming X-rays into the detectors. The two structures are mounted at the front of the Yohkoh spacecraft, on either side of the central panel, with a thermal filter mounted in front of each spectrometer. The crystal dispersion axes are oriented north-south.

The Black Body Calibration Mechanism. The black body observations are performed at least once a day. The mechanism uses two black bodies: one having the ambient spacecraft temperature and one heated to about 50 K above it. First the black body at ambient spacecraft temperature is viewed, and forms the reference signal. Then the heated black body is viewed, and the temperature difference between both black bodies is used to obtain the response of the detectors. The obtained response is converted into counts and transmitted to earth.

CONT
