It is commonly used as a term to describe a system of representing images, where the image is composed of small, internally uniform cells arranged in a grid. The order of image storage is typically by scanlines, progressing from left to right along scanlines, and then from top to bottom from one scan to the next. Some GIS systems use raster image structure. 2, record 4, English, - raster

When the beam has returned to the left side, its vertical position is lowered so that the beam will scan the next line down and not repeat the same line. This is accomplished by the vertical scanning motion of the beam, which is provided in addition to horizontal scanning. As a result of the vertical scanning, all the horizontal lines slope downward slightly from top to bottom. When the beam is at the bottom, vertical retrace returns the beam to the top to start the scanning sequence again. 4, record 6, English, - vertical%20scanning

Record number: 12, Textual support number: 1 CONT
One type of scanner is called a whiskbroom scanner also referred to as across-track scanners. It uses rotating mirrors to scan the landscape below from side to side perpendicular to the direction of the sensor platform, like a whiskbroom. The width of the sweep is referred to as the sensor swath. The rotating mirrors redirect the reflected light to a point where a single or just a few sensor detectors are grouped together. Whiskbroom scanners with their moving mirrors tend to be large and complex to build. The moving mirrors create spatial distortions that must be corrected with preprocessing by the data provider before image data is delivered to the user. An advantage of whiskbroom scanners is that they have fewer sensor detectors to keep calibrated as compared to other types of sensors. 5, record 12, English, - across%2Dtrack%20scanner

Along-track scanners also use the forward motion of the platform to record successive scan lines and build up a two-dimensional image, perpendicular to the flight direction. However, instead of a scanning mirror, they use a linear array of detectors located at the focal plane of the image formed by lens systems, which are "pushed" along in the flight track direction (i.e. along track). Progressive-scan DVD players add an important additional step to create a better-looking picture - they generate a progressive-scan video signal through a process called de-interlacing (sometimes called "line-doubling"). The de-interlacer's first task is to look at the interlaced video signal as it leaves the MPEG decoder and determine whether its original source was 24-frame-per-second film or 30-frame-per-second video. The original frame rate determines the type of processing necessary to create an optimized progressive-scan signal. 3, record 26, English, - line%2Ddoubling

Line quadrupling is similar to line doubling except that the number of horizontal scan lines are increased by a factor of four instead of two. Increasing the horizontal scan rate by a factor of four (to 63 kHz), allows most CRT's [cathode ray tubes] to obtain a range of optimum efficiency, maximizing light output with projector light output up to 60% brighter than NTSC, PAL, or SECAM displays. In addition to increased picture brightness, the image becomes smoother and has a "film-like" quality. 2, record 27, English, - line%20quadrupling

[Television and video screen] The number of horizontal lines per second (15,750 hertz in the United States). 1, record 38, English, - horizontal%20repetition%20rate
Record number: 38, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The number of horizontal scanning lines in a field is one-half the total 525 lines for a complete frame, since one field contains every other line. This yields 262 1/2 horizontal lines for each vertical field. Since the time for a field is 1/60 s and since it contains 262 1/2 lines, the number of lines per second is 262 1/2 lines, the number of lines per second is 262 1/2 X 60 = 15,750. 3, record 38, English, - horizontal%20repetition%20rate

2, record 39, French, - balayage%20vid%C3%A9o
