An important property insofar as drainage through fabrics is concerned is the porosity or size of opening of the fabric. This is most accurately determined by tests common to the area of quantitative metallography. Such devices as "image analyzers," which rapidly scan the specimen and give, by light reflection, the percentage of void to fiber, are ideal for this use. Most systems also have data storage capabilities which allow for scanning of a relatively large specimen and thereby obtain meaningful statistical data on the mean size of openings and the standard deviation or variance of these openings. 1, record 1, English, - image%20analyzer

Confocal microscopy. Unlike "normal" microscopy, only a spot of a minimum size in the specimen is illuminated in confocal microscopy. To enable an image to be formed from this, the specimen must be scanned. The image of the spot is directed through a pinhole stop in an intermediate image plane. As a result, only light from the focal plane can reach the detector (a photomultiplier). All other (out-of-focus) planes are blocked out. This results in an "optical section". The images are stored electronically and displayed on a monitor. A series of optical sections can be recorded by moving a motor a slight distance along the z-axis each time an image has been recorded, after which the next image is then also recorded. Such a z-series permits the electronic reconstruction of the three-dimensional structure using suitable computer programs. The procedure, which is restricted to incident-light techniques, has completely revolutionized fluorescence microscopy in biology in particular. 2, record 3, English, - confocal%20microscopy

We present a novel technique in which a reflection scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) is used for direct writing of nano-scale patterns into hydrogen-passivated silicon surfaces. The reflection SNOM is operated as a combined shear-force/near-field microscope enabling simultaneous imaging of topographical and optical properties with subwavelength resolution. ... Beside high resolution optical imaging (<50 nm) and patterning of hydrogen-passivated silicon surfaces, the SNOM can also be used for transferring nano-scale patterns into ordinary photo resist with a typical resolution of 50-100 nm. The SNOM thereby overcomes the far-field diffraction limit of conventional photolithography. 5, record 4, English, - scanning%20near%2Dfield%20optical%20microscope

In synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging, microwave pulses are transmitted by an antenna towards the Earth surface. The microwave energy scattered back to the spacecraft is measured. The SAR makes use of the radar principle to form an image by utilising the time delay of the backscattered signals. In real aperture radar imaging, the groud resolution is limited by the size of the microwave beam sent out from the antenna. Finer details on the ground can be resolved by using a narrower beam. The beam width is inversely proportional to the size of the antenna, i.e. the longer the antenna, the narrower the beam. 2, record 13, English, - radar%20pulse

3, record 20, French, - image
