We present a novel technique in which a reflection scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) is used for direct writing of nano-scale patterns into hydrogen-passivated silicon surfaces. The reflection SNOM is operated as a combined shear-force/near-field microscope enabling simultaneous imaging of topographical and optical properties with subwavelength resolution. ... Beside high resolution optical imaging (<50 nm) and patterning of hydrogen-passivated silicon surfaces, the SNOM can also be used for transferring nano-scale patterns into ordinary photo resist with a typical resolution of 50-100 nm. The SNOM thereby overcomes the far-field diffraction limit of conventional photolithography. 5, record 9, English, - scanning%20near%2Dfield%20optical%20microscope

In scanning electron microscopy (SEM), a fine probe of electrons with energies typically up to 40 keV [kiloelectron volts] is focused on a specimen, and scanned along a pattern of parallel lines. Various signals are generated as a result of the impact of the incident electrons, which are collected to form an image or to analyse the sample surface. These are mainly secondary electrons, with energies of a few tens of eV [electron volts], high-energy electrons backscattered from the primary beam and characteristic X-rays. 5, record 11, English, - scanning%20electron%20microscopy

The beam is moved in a point-to-point manner over the surface of the specimen. These electrons are deflected, collected, accelerated, and directed against a scintillator. 2, record 12, Spanish, - microscopio%20electr%C3%B3nico%20de%20barrido

SNOM is the acronym for "scanning near-field optical microscopy," an alternative name for NSOM (near-field scanning optical microscopy). The basic principle of such a kind of technique is quite simple: light passes through a sub-wavelength diameter aperture and illuminates a sample that is placed within its near field, at a distance much less than the wavelength of the light. The resolution achieved is far better than that which conventional optical microscopes can attain. 4, record 13, English, - scanning%20near%2Dfield%20optical%20microscopy

Microscopists are now in a position to transfer the refinements of the past 100-year techniques for enhancing contrast and highlighting specific features, such as polarization contrast, immunofluorescence and phase contrast to scanning near-field optical microscopy. With existing scanned-probe microscopes we can "see" the nanometer realm of molecules and microcircuits. As the same technology is applied to optical microscopy, we may eventually come to see that world in the familiar terms of light, shadow and color. 6, record 13, English, - scanning%20near%2Dfield%20optical%20microscopy

The four most common means of collecting asbestos settled dust samples are: · Adhesive lift sampling. · Wipe sampling. · Passive sampling. · "Microvacuum" sampling. ... Of these methods, microvacuum sampling is the most commonly used. A protocol has been established by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) for collecting and analyzing asbestos microvacuum samples. Samples are collected using either a 25mm or 37mm air sampling cassette using a plastic tube that acts as a nozzle. A known surface area is vacuumed and TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) analysis is performed. 1, record 27, English, - microvacuum%20sampling

A laser scanning microscopy system that focuses on a single plane of light through a biological substance, allowing high-resolution, three-dimensional images to be built up. 4, record 41, English, - confocal%20laser%20scanning%20microscopy
Record number: 41, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy (LSCM, also referred to as CSLM, Confocal Scanning Laser Microscopy) is now established as a valuable tool for obtaining high resolution images and 3-D reconstructions of a variety of biological specimens. In LSCM, a laser light beam is expanded to make optimal use of the optics in the objective. Through a x-y deflection mechanism this beam is turned into a scanning beam, focussed to a small spot by an objective lens onto a fluorescent specimen. The mixture of reflected light and emitted fluorescent light is captured by the same objective and (after conversion into a static beam by the x-y scanner device) is focused onto a photodetector (photomultiplier) via a dichroic mirror (beam splitter). The reflected light is deviated by the dichroic mirror while the emitted fluorescent light passes through in the direction of the photomultiplier. A confocal aperture (pinhole) is placed in front of the photodetector, such that the fluorescent light (not the reflected light!) from points on the specimen that are not within the focal plane (the so called out-of-focus light) where the laser beam was focussed will be largly obstructed by the pinhole. In this way, out-of-focus information (both above and below the focal plane) is greatly reduced. 2, record 41, English, - confocal%20laser%20scanning%20microscopy

3, record 42, French, - microscope%20confocal%20%C3%A0%20balayage%20laser

Several [internal cooling] systems have been developed that incorporate three basic approaches: liquified gas, super-cold air with water vapor, and air exchange methods. With the liquified gas system, immediately after the parison has been expanded, liquid carbon dioxide or nitrogen is atomized through a nozzle in the blow pin into the interior of the bottle. The liquid quickly vaporizes, removing heat, and exhausts at the end of the cycle. In practice, this method has improved production rates by 25 to 35%. A disadvantage is the cost of the liquified gas. If its consumption is not precisely controlled, the total cost savings becomes minimal. 1, record 46, English, - liquified%20gas%20system

Normally, a blow-molded part is cooled externally by the mold cavity, forcing heat to travel through the entire wall thickness. With the poor thermal conductivity of plastic resins, molding cycle times of heavy parts can be considerable. Internal cooling systems are designed to speed the mold cooling time, thus reducing costs by removing some of this heat from the inside. Several systems have been developed that incorporate three basic approaches: liquified gas, super-cold air with water vapor, and air exchange methods. 1, record 52, English, - internal%20cooling%20system
