A remote sensing device which operates on the same principle as the infrared scanner except that it is capable of recording data in the ultraviolet and visible portions of the spectrum as well as the infrared.

CONT

In most infrared scanner designs ... a filter is placed in the radiation path to limit the wavelength of response to the desired thermal window. The multispectral scanner, on the other hand, observes the scene in a number of discrete bands.

An MSS image will have data recorded by the scanner from several wavebands of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Ces satellites sont équipés de deux systèmes imageurs : un balayeur multispectral(MSS) et un appareil de cartographie thématique(Thematic Mapper ou TM), qui captent le rayonnement électromagnétique et l'enregistrent sur bande sous forme numérique; les données numériques sont par la suite soumises à des traitements et restituées sous forme d’images.

A modified vidicon television camera tube, in which the output signal is derived from the depleted electron beam, reflected from the tube target. The RBV can be considered as a cross between a vidicon and an orthicon. RBV's provide highest resolution TV imagery, and are used in the ERTS (LANDSAT) series.

The multispectral scanner onboard ERTS-1 is an optical mechanical scanner which senses simultaneously in four bands of the spectrum. (...) Thus four different images of the same scene are obtainable, each depicting the scene in slightly different fashion.

On appelle "scène" l'ensemble des quatre images qui sont enregistrées simultanément dans les quatre canaux du MSS [balayeur multispectral], les longueurs d’onde s’étalant depuis le vert(500 nm) jusqu'au proche infrarouge(1 100nm). L'ensemble d’une scène contient finalement plus de 30 millions d’échantillons, chacun étant codé avec 8 bits(ou signaux binaires).
