Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Prior to the 1880s, ships used solid ballast materials such as rocks and sand, which had to be manually shoveled into cargo holds, and similarly discharged when cargo was to be loaded on board. If not properly secured, solid ballast was prone to shifting in heavy seas causing instability. With the introduction of steel-hulled vessels and pumping technology, water became the ballast of choice. 2, record 3, English, - ballast

3, record 3, French, - lest

The spiny water flea (Bythotrephes cederstroemi) is not an insect but a small crustacean, about half an inch long with a long, sharp, barbed tail spine. It is native to Great Britain, and its home range extended through northern Europe east to the Caspian Sea. It was first found in Lake Huron in 1984, and was most likely introduced from ballast water discharge from a trans-oceanic freighter. Since then, populations of the crustacean have exploded and it can now be found throughout the Great Lakes and in many inland lakes and waterways. 3, record 39, English, - spiny%20water%20flea

These vessels declare "no ballast on board" (NOBOB) and therefore are not subject to comply with the standard ballast water management procedures for ballasted vessels. ... NOBOB ships cannot completely empty their ballast tanks due to structural and pumping limitations and, as a result, they can still contain residual amounts of ballast water and sediment. The MLA [light metro lane] vehicles consists of one or more coaches permanently coupled, electric propulsion and automated constrained drive, suited to run both ways. ... The line consists of two runways, separate and next to each other, each one dedicated to one running way. The line has been planned in order to be efficiently adapted to the lay-out features and has been integrated in a light-built way, both from the construction and optic point of view, thanks also to the rather slim size and agility of the coaches. The overall width of the MLA-way is about 7 m, including both running ways and the pedestrian service-gangways. 1, record 98, English, - runway

BRT [bus rapid transit] is a flexible form of rapid transit that combines transit stations, vehicles, services, running way, and ITS [intelligent transport system] elements into an integrated system appropriate to the market it serves and its physical environment. BRT uses vehicles that may be driver-steered, guided mechanically or electronically. It can be incrementally implemented in a variety of environments, from totally dedicated to transit (surface, elevated, underground) to mixed with other traffic on streets and highways. 3, record 98, English, - runway

3, record 98, French, - voie%20de%20roulement
