Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Prior to the 1880s, ships used solid ballast materials such as rocks and sand, which had to be manually shoveled into cargo holds, and similarly discharged when cargo was to be loaded on board. If not properly secured, solid ballast was prone to shifting in heavy seas causing instability. With the introduction of steel-hulled vessels and pumping technology, water became the ballast of choice. 2, record 4, English, - ballast

Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 CONT

The submersible platforms have been developed from earlier submersible barges which were used in shallow inlet drilling along the United States Gulf Coast. The platforms are towed to location and then submerged to the sea bottom. They are very stable and can operate in areas with soft sea floors. Difficulty in towing is a disadvantage, but this is partially offset by the rapidity with which they can be raised or lowered, once on location. 3, record 15, English, - submersible%20platform
