Tuvaijuittuq is an area of particular ecological importance due to the presence of old, thick, multi-year pack ice. Sea ice provides habitat for ice-adapted organisms, such as microscopic algae, that form the basis of, and provide energy for, Arctic marine food webs all the way up to marine mammals and polar bears. The seabed community in this area is more abundant and diverse than previously expected and may also have important implications for supporting larger animals such as walrus and bearded seals. 3, record 6, English, - Tuvaijuittuq%20Marine%20Protected%20Area

4, record 8, French, - couche%20de%20m%C3%A9lange

Although the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is the lead agency for the National Aquatic Animal Health Program (NAAHP), the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) is responsible for providing diagnostic and research support. This virtual Centre of Expertise (COE) will provide consistent and scientifically robust delivery of aquatic animal health diagnostics and research in support of NAAHP, research diseases of highest regulatory significance through the nationally coordinated Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory System that includes the Gulf Fisheries Centre, Moncton, NB; the Pacific Biological Station, Nanaimo, BC; and the Freshwater Institute, Winnipeg, MB. The Centre has three primary priorities: 1) diagnostic methods, 2) technology development, and 3) knowledge generation. This COE will develop and validate quality assured diagnostic methods for priority diseases, develop efficient and effective technology platforms in support of analytical procedures and diagnostic tests, and develop a sound scientific knowledge base in support of regulatory programs and risk-based management. Research priorities established in conjunction with CFIA include: viral strain differentiation and correlation to pathogenic significance, development and validations of diagnostic tools, disease transmission via product, carrier species, non-lethal sampling, processing effluent, decontamination procedures, and emerging disease investigation. As aquatic animal health issues expand, the Centre will provide the research and diagnostics required to protect Canada’s seafood trade. 1, record 21, English, - Centre%20of%20Expertise%20for%20Aquatic%20Animal%20Health%20and%20Research%20Diagnostics

7, record 36, French, - bouclier%20antimissile

During the past several decades the coastal States of the world have been extending seaward their claims to jurisdiction over what has traditionally been recognized as the free seas. Claims have been both geographical, applied to specific maritime areas enclosed by boundaries, and functional, pertaining to certain competences such as control over fishing or drilling for hydrocarbons on the continental shelf. The net effect of these claims has been the gradual partitioning of nearly one-third of the global ocean into various types of maritime zones. The process of expanding maritime claims, sometimes termed "creeping jurisdiction" or "the ocean enclosure movement", may be approaching a temporary plateau. 1, record 49, English, - ocean%20enclosure%20movement
