En biologie, le terme de photorécepteur est parfois utilisé pour désigner tout dispositif susceptible de capter l’énergie lumineuse; en ce sens les chloroplastes des végétaux ou les chromatophores des Bactéries sont des photorécepteurs. Dans une acception plus restreinte [...] les photorécepteurs sont les structures dont la fonction est de détecter les variations d’éclairement du milieu. Cette fonction ne doit pas être confondue avec celle qui consiste en une absorption de l’énergie lumineuse en vue de son utilisation au bénéfice de l’organisme (synthèse chlorophyllienne, par exemple).
