Founded by eight states (Belgium, France, Germany,Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Switzerland, United Kingdom) in 1964, the European Pharmacopoeia has the task of laying down common standards for the composition and preparation of substances used in the manufacture of medicines -- and so guaranteeing their quality. The Pharmacopoeia has 26 member states, in which its "monographs" have force of law, replacing the old national pharmacopoeias. It is recognised as one of the main authorities on quality and safety of medicines, and its co-operation with the European Union has resulted in the setting-up of a scientific research programme to standardise biological medicines, and an official network of medicine control laboratories (OMCL). This pooling of expertise helps to ensure that the same quality standards are guaranteed throughout Europe. 2, record 5, English, - European%20Pharmacopoeia

1, record 5, French, - Pharmacop%C3%A9e%20europ%C3%A9enne
