The AS boundary router ... advertises external routes throughout the autonomous system. AS boundary routers can be internal or area border routers, and might or might not be connected to the backbone.

Le protocole OSPF distingue quatre classes de routeurs : 1. les routeurs intra-zones (ou internes) entièrement à l’intérieur d’une zone, 2. les routeurs inter-zones (border routers) connectés à deux zones (ou plus), 3. les routeurs fédérateurs (backbone routers) connectés à l’épine dorsale, 4. les routeurs inter-systèmes autonomes (boundary routers) connectés aux routeurs d’autres systèmes autonomes.

Routeurs de frontière de système autonome (ASBR pour Autonomous System Boundary Router) : ils possèdent au moins une interface dans un autre système autonome que celui dans lequel il se trouve. Ce système autonome peut utiliser un protocole de routage différent de OSPF.

Les routeurs externes(inter SA) [...] ont un rôle encore différent. Ils vont annoncer aux routeurs EGP(ou BGP), donc à l'extérieur du SA, l'ensemble des réseaux présent dans le SA et leur coûts. De cette manière, tout les réseaux sont connus au niveau des routeurs EGP. Par ailleurs, chaque routeur externe inondera l'ensemble du SA de message LSA qui permettront à toutes les passerelles de connaître le plus court chemin vers l'extérieur. Le routage vers l'extérieur se fera alors par défaut.
