Record 1 2002-09-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mountain Sports
DEF

A complicated camming chock which adjusts automatically to a continuous range of crack sizes and shapes.

CONT

The three or four cams in a spring-loaded camming device are connected to a trigger mechanism. Pull the trigger and the cams retract. ... Release the trigger and the cams again rotate outward. ... The three or four cams rotate independently of each other, permitting each other to expand to the maximum, wherever it may sit in a particular crack.

OBS

Friends are only one type of SLCDs. Now there are Amigos, Camalots, Micromates, Buddies, etc. Therefore, it is best to avoid using "Friend" when speaking of a spring-loaded camming device.

Key term(s)
  • spring loaded camming device

DEF

Record 2 2002-09-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mountain Sports
DEF

A device that climbers anchor in a crack and connect to their ropes ... designed to stop a falling climber.

CONT

In the early days ... leaders used natural chockstones ... Soon it became apparent that an artificial chockstone [was] superior to improvised "stones" ... their shape and variety of sizes allowed them to be placed and removed quickly and easily in all sizes of cracks, and the hole in the center seemed just made for inserting runners ... they do not chip or scar the rock ...

CONT

[A chock is] often called a nut, because the original type of chock was a machine nut picked-up along the railroad tracks on the way to British cliff climbs. Chocks are normally threaded with a steel cable, or with nylon rope or webbing to allow carabiners to be clipped to them.

DEF

Record 3 1991-12-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mountain Sports
CONT

The straight taper is the original design ... The wider, or "face sides" are flat and tapered down at the same angle. These are most useful in a crack whose sides taper uniformly, and where the slot best matches the taper of the nut.

CONT

Many climbers find it easier to place and remove (clean) a straight-sided ... wedge. However, the straight-sided wedge doesn't provide the same grip on the rock as a curved one.

English

Subject field(s)

OBS

The curve of the taper varies with each manufacturer. When the curving is less pronounced, they are generally the easier to remove.

CONT

The curved taper has virtually replaced the straight taper in the medium to large range. One side is concave, the other convex.... When placed and yanked on, the curved taper does a quasi-camming action on the convex side until it rotates into the best spot.

OBS
