Pour fermer un puits, on utilise une plate-forme de forage spéciale, qui injecte une boue épaisse à la tête du puits pour bloquer le flux de pétrole et de gaz. Ceci provoque, à une échelle réduite, la fermeture des pores de la roche, modifie la pression à l'intérieur du puits et complique fatalement la reprise de la production. Le puits lui-même est également bouché en y déversant du ciment.
