Dans une mer ou un lac [...] l'eau est homogène sur l'épaisseur d’une «couche de mélange» ou «couche homogène», brassée par le vent. L'homogénéisation concerne principalement la température [...], et la base de cette couche est marquée par une couche en général peu épaisse, dite thermocline, au sein de laquelle la température rejoint rapidement celle des couches plus profondes. [...] Dans le vocabulaire de la limnologie, la couche homogène localisée au-dessus de la thermocline est appelée l'épilimnion; la couche sous-jacente(relativement homogène elle aussi), l'hypolimnion. Cependant, la structure de la masse d’eau est souvent plus complexe encore puisque dans les lacs profonds, et surtout en mer, il n’ est pas rare d’observer plusieurs thermoclines à des profondeurs successives, séparant des couches d’eau homogènes.

L’épaisseur de la couche de mélange varie avec l’agitation des eaux : lors d’une tempête, elle peut s’épaissir fortement pour réduire après quelques jours de temps calme.

Mélange d’eaux usées et de boues activées qui subit un recyclage et une aération dans le bassin ou le canal d’aération d’un ouvrage de traitement par boues activées.

Boues activées. Le procédé consiste à provoquer le développement d’un flot bactérien(boues activées) dans un bassin d’aération alimenté en eau à traiter. Dans ce bassin, le mélange(liqueur mixte) est brassée de façon à maintenir les boues en suspension, et reçoit l'oxygène nécessaire à la prolifération des microorganismes aérobies.

Washing and Scrubbing the Ore. Washing of run-of-mine ore removes obscuring dust and casual dirt from the surface of the pieces and facilitates recognition when hand picking is to be practised. A second effect may be the removal of primary slimes of no value. Clays, colloidal fines, and similar valueless material can easily be taken out at the earlier stages, but may be difficult to remove once fine crushing has liberated a substantial quantity of finely shattered mineral. ... The disintegrating forces used are of a gentle nature, not intended to fracture the ore but simply to tumble particle against particle until the desired amount of cleansing has been accomplished.
