Ainsi les scintigraphies couplées, ventilation-perfusion pulmonaires donnent chez le malade une évaluation très rapide de l'étendue et de la gravité des lésions purement vasculaires(embolies). Elles permettent d’évaluer également la localisation et l'intensité de certaines lésions ventilatoires(bulles d’emphysème), d’apprécier le retentissement anatomo-physiologique des atteintes mécaniques respiratoires(déformation de la cage thoracique). Enfin, elles donnent des arguments fondamentaux dans le bilan d’opérabilité des cancers pulmonaires.
