Materials-handling machines that lift and lower a load along a fixed vertical path of travel with intermittent motion. In contrast to hoisting machines, elevating machines support their loads instead of carrying them suspended, and the path they travel is both fixed and vertical. They differ from vertical conveyors in operating with intermittent rather than continuous motion. Industrial lifts, stackers, and freight elevators are the principal classes of elevating machines.

The structure used in a mine shaft for the conveyance of men and materials.

CONT

The approximate weight of a steel cage is 1 1/2 times that of the coal it carries, or about equal to the weight of the coal and the mine cars. Cages are usually designed to take one or two cars per deck and may be single or multi-decked. Where multidecked cages are used, simultaneous or consecutive discharge of decks can be employed. The modern trend is towards consecutive decking with power-operated cage unloading equipment. Cages can be either steel, composite or all-alloy construction. An all-alloy cage is about half the weight of its all-steel equivalent. The cage is suspended from bridle chains which in turn are attached to the cappel of the winding rope. Normally there are two cages in simultaneous operation in the shaft and travelling in opposite directions.

La poulie Koepe, qui porte le nom de son inventeur, peut être installée au sol ou au sommet de la tour d’extraction. Elle utilise uniquement l'adhérence du câble d’extraction, auquel sont suspendues, à une extrémité, la cage chargée et, à l'autre, la cage vide. Pour diminuer la différence de tension sur les deux brins, un câble d’équilibre est fixé sous les cages. Pour augmenter l'adhérence, la gorge de la poulie est munie de brochets, en bois ou en matière à grande adhérence, dans lesquels est creusée une rainure semi-circulaire de même diamètre que celui du câble.
