A PAPR, powered air purifying respirator, is a positive air system that uses a battery to power a blower, which then pumps air through a filter into a mask or a hood. The blower, battery and filters are usually belt-worn, and connected to the hood or mask by a breathing tube. The clean, filtered, cool air flows into the breathing zone. The airflow is much higher than the wearer needs to breathe, and the excess flow creates a positive pressure as it passes through the mask. This pressure pushes out, and keeps contamination from leaking in. This is different from a normal gas mask, which uses the wearer's lung power to pull air through a filter. There are three types of respiratory protection: air-purifying respirators ["filtrants," "à purification d'air" or "à épuration d'air"], supplied-air respirators ["à adduction d'air"] and self-contained breathing apparatus ["autonome"]. Air-purifying respirators clean contaminated air before it is inhaled by passing the air through a cleansing media such as a mechanical filter, cartridge or filter/cartridge combination. The air is passed through the cleansing media by breathing or by a blower. These latter are called powered air-purifying respirators.

The two principal types are: - mask-mounted motor/airflow unit with filter and battery pack, no supplied-air hose ["ensemble moteur/ventilateur, filtre et bloc-piles, sans tuyau d'alimentation d'air"]; - waist-worn pack motor/fan powered by rechargeable nickel cadmium battery, delivering clean air via a hose ["moteur/ventilateur alimenté par piles rechargeables, tuyau d'alimentation d'air"]. The flow: can be constant or on-demand.

Toutefois, des appareils de protection respiratoire (APR) offrant des facteurs de protection supérieurs sont disponibles et pourraient aussi être utilisés. Il est proposé d’utiliser, par-dessus le masque N-95, un appareil de protection respiratoire (APR) à épuration d’air motorisé communément appelé en anglais « PAPR » («Powered Air-Purifying Respirators»).

Appareils de protection respiratoire à épuration d’air. Ces appareils procèdent en filtrant mécaniquement ou chimiquement l’air ambiant contaminé. Ils peuvent être utilisés contre des particules (poussières, fumées, brouillards), des vapeurs et des gaz. La ventilation peut être assistée par un système motorisé (PAPR : Powered Air-Purifying Respirator). Un appareil de protection respiratoire à épuration d’air ne produit pas d’oxygène. Il ne peut donc pas être utilisé dans une atmosphère pauvre en oxygène.

Les systèmes d’épuration d’air propulsé de 3M comprennent un souffleur motorisé qui achemine l'air vers la cagoule. Ces systèmes à batterie, portés à la taille, permettent une plus grande liberté de mouvement et de polyvalence nécessaire pour opérer dans une multitude d’environnements. [...] Système à adduction d’air propulsé et filtré. Protection respiratoire. Les systèmes à adduction d’air «Breathe-Easy» de 3M(«Racal») assurent à l'utilisateur une purification automatique de l'air. Le système est léger, confortable, efficace et se compose d’une «unité turbo» et d’un ensemble de tête.

Les termes qui suivent ont aussi été analysés mais n’ont pas été retenus : appareil (de protection) respiratoire à adduction d’air (filtré) alimenté par piles, respirateur à adduction d’air filtré fonctionnant à l’aide de piles (ou d’une batterie ou d’un bloc-piles : pas faux, mais rend une partie du concept seulement, celle qui correspond à l’expression anglaise «battery pack respirator», «battery powered respirator» - le «powered» se rapporte au fait que c’est un appareil motorisé); masque respiratoire - moteur/purification de l’air (pas un terme); respirateur à adduction d’air filtré à pression positive intermittente actionné à l’aide d’un moteur («intermittente» est inexact); respirateur d’épuration d’air à air propulsé («d’air à air» : trop d’«air»); respirateur à adduction d’air propulsé et filtré, respirateur à adduction d’air filtré avec ensemble moteur/ventilateur (il faut utiliser «à adduction d’air» pour traduire «supplied-air respirator», ici il s’agit du type «air-purifying»).
