L'ouvrage repose sur la face supérieure du caisson qui «flotte» ainsi dans le terrain sous l'effet d’une poussée à allure hydrostatique.

Descriptive of materials which do not allow other substances to penetrate or pass through them.

On an MSDS [Material Safety Data Sheet], impervious is a term used to describe protective gloves and other protective clothing. If a material is impervious to a chemical, then that chemical cannot readily penetrate through the material or damage the material. Different materials are impervious (resistant) to different chemicals. No single material is impervious to all chemicals. If an MSDS recommends wearing impervious gloves, you need to know the type of material from which the gloves should be made. For example, neoprene gloves are impervious to butyl alcohol but not to ethyl alcohol.

Le mot imperméable sert ordinairement à décrire des gants et autres vêtements de protection. Lorsqu’on dit qu’une matière est imperméable à une certaine substance, cela veut dire qu’elle empêche la substance en question de pénétrer ou d’endommager la matière. Différents matières sont imperméables à différentes substances. Il n’existe pas de matière qui soit imperméable à toutes les substances. Si une FTSS recommande de porter des gants imperméables (étanches), vous devez chercher à savoir en quelle matière ces gants devraient être fabriqués. Par exemple, les gants de néoprène sont imperméables à l’alcool butylique mais pas à l’alcool éthylique.

étanche : Se dit de ce qui ne laisse pas passer les liquides, les gaz, les poussières, l'humidité [p. ex. ] : Tonneau, caisson, [...] montre étanche.

imperméable : Se dit d’un tissu ou d’un support qui a été soumis à un traitement l’empêchant d’être traversé par aucun fluide [p. ex.] : Des chaussures en toile imperméable.

OBS

Selon nous, dans le contexte des vêtements de protection, l’adjectif «imperméable» est préférable à «étanche». «Imperméable», comme l’illustre l’observation qui précède, désigne plus spécialement les tissus impénétrables, alors que «étanche» se rapporte plutôt à un contenant, un objet qui serait «bien fermé», en quelque sorte.
