The term feathering refers to the operation of rotating the blades of a propeller to an edge-to-the-wind position for the purpose of stopping the rotation of the propeller whose blades are thus feathered and to reduce drag. Therefore, a feathered blade is an approximate in-line-of-flight position, streamlined with the line of flight. Some, but not all, propellers can be feathered. Feathering is necessary when an engine fails or when it is desirable to shut off an engine in flight. The pressure of the air on the face and back of the feathered blade is equal, and the propeller will stop rotating. If it is not feathered when its engine stops driving it, the propeller will "windmill" and cause drag. 3, record 2, English, - feathering

"Feathering" a propeller means rotating the propeller blades about 90 degrees so each blade is streamlined with the wind, which gives minimum drag. 2, record 7, English, - feather%20the%20propeller
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 2 OBS
A feathering propeller can alter the pitch of the blades up to almost 90 degrees. That is, the blade pitch is changed so that they have their leading edge pointing right into the direction of flight, offering minimum resistance to the airflow. This mode allows the propeller rotation to be stopped, without adding excessive drag to the aircraft. Feather may be used to improve the performance of the aircraft after the failure of an engine, but more usually in light aircraft it is used in motor glider applications. 3, record 7, English, - feather%20the%20propeller

2, record 11, French, - but%C3%A9e%20petit%20pas%20sol

The torque that continues to be developed at the tool output shaft after the load has stalled the pneumatic tool. 1, record 14, English, - static%20stall%20torque
Record number: 14, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The value may depend upon the angular position of the motor shaft at the time of stalling, with a maximum in the case of the most advantageous position of the shaft and a minimum in the case of the least advantageous position. It also depends on the speed reduction ratio and on the efficiency of the speed reduction gear or of any other transmission system included if required in the tool between the motor and the final output shaft. 1, record 14, English, - static%20stall%20torque

1, record 14, French, - couple%20de%20calage%20statique

Most pitch-changing mechanisms are operated by oil pressure (hydraulically) and use some type of piston-and-cylinder arrangement. The piston may move in the cylinder, or the cylinder may move over a stationary piston. The linear motion of the piston is converted by several different types of mechanical linkage into the rotary motion necessary to change the blade angle. The mechanical connection may be through gears, the pitch-changing mechanism turning a drive gear or power gear that meshes with a gear attached to the butt of each blade. 3, record 15, English, - pitch%2Dchange%20mechanism

1, record 15, French, - m%C3%A9canisme%20de%20changement%20de%20pas

A true pitch propeller is one that makes use of the blade-element theory. Each element (section) of the blade travels at a different rate of speed, that is, the tip sections travel faster than the sections close to the hub. When the elements (sections) are arranged so that each is set at the proper angle to the relative airstream, they all advance the same distance during any single revolution of the propeller. 1, record 18, English, - true%20pitch%20propeller

3, record 18, French, - h%C3%A9lice%20%C3%A0%20pas%20constant
