La calciseptine, isolée à partir du venin de Dendroaspis polylepis, interagit sélectivement avec le canal calcium de type L situé principalement au niveau des cellules cardiaques ventriculaires ou des cellules musculaires lisses aortiques. Sa fixation provoque le blocage de ce canal ionique et l'abolition du couplage excitation-contraction des cellules musculaires lisses et finalement à l'inhibition de la contraction cardiaque.
