Algospeak refers to code words or turns of phrase users have adopted in an effort to create a brand-safe lexicon that will avoid getting their posts removed or down-ranked by content moderation systems. For instance, in many online videos, it's common to say "unalive" rather than "dead," "SA" instead of "sexual assault," or "spicy eggplant" instead of "vibrator." 2, record 1, English, - algospeak

Companion planting is the process of planting specific plants together so a certain quality of one plant may be of benefit to another. The smell of a plant's foliage or the taste of a plant may be all that is necessary to discourage some insects. Some plants make great companions in that they encourage insects for pollination, provide shelter or support, or they simply grow well together because their roots are at different levels. Some plants are great companions as they may "disguise" the legginess of other plants or they help cool the soil for plants that require cool roots. 2, record 11, English, - companion%20planting

1, record 15, French, - th%C3%A9orie%20de%20la%20d%C3%A9l%C3%A9gation

A smothered verb is a verb converted to a noun, so it needs a helping verb and prepositions or articles to express action. This lengthens a sentence and saps its vitality. It also encourages use of the passive voice. "We are in agreement with the decision." In this sentence, the writer has smothered the main verb (agree) with a noun (agreement). The noun now requires a helping verb (are) and a preposition (in) to show action. 3, record 16, English, - smothered%20verb

Who Was That Masked Verb? An easy way to make your writing more brief is to unmask verbs. A masked (or smothered) verb kills your sentence with word overload or by unnecessarily combining nouns and verbs. So instead of writing, "The report is saying everything is fine," write, "The report says everything is fine." You've strengthened the verb by taking out "is," a static word that does little to move the reader forward. Other examples: "The committee made the decision to adjourn" vs. "The committee decided to adjourn"; "I came to the conclusion he was right" vs. "I concluded he was right." 2, record 16, English, - smothered%20verb

Because distrust of government, business, the media and every other institution of society runs so high, many people do want to shut out these "official" sources of information. This doesn't mean they are not communicating. On the contrary, their appetite for information, a manifestation of their need for communality, is greater than ever. But in place of network television and the daily paper, people are turning to what I call "the stealth media" - the 1990s equivalent of the barroom conversation. They send faxes by day and sign on to computers at night to have conversations with strangers in terms they understand - terms that would not pass most political-correctness tests but nevertheless reflect the language they understand and use among themselves. 1, record 26, English, - stealth%20media
