The matchlock constituted the first mechanical device for firing. (...) For this improvement (...) two modifications of the hand cannon were necessary: the addition of a pan to hold the priming powder, which replaced the match in setting off the powder charge inside the barrel, and the addition of the serpentine, holding the match and thus freeing the hand of the shooter or his aide. These original matchlocks did not as yet include the leverage system worked by a trigger and indeed did, not have true "locks". Instead, the serpentine was a simple S-shaped arm pivoted in its center, the lower end serving as a handle by which the shooter moved the device manually. 1, record 3, English, - match

Bosik Consultants Limited operates the National Research Council's Flight Impact Simulator Facility in Ottawa, ON. The facility houses a large pneumatic cannon (10-inch barrel diameter, measuring approximately 75 feet in length) employed to propel birds to their targets in order to simulate bird strikes with aircraft components. Aircraft components typically impacted include windshields, wings and empennage leading edges. 4, record 4, English, - flight%20impact%20simulator
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 2 CONT
NRC's [National Research Council of Canada] flight impact simulators or bird guns have three parts: a storage reservoir (tank at the back) pressurized to the test pressure; a step chamber (half of the reservoir's pressure); and a barrel with sabot arrestor. The sabot, which holds the projectile, must withstand the launch, protect the projectile and crush the muzzle arrestor so that nothing but the projectile continues on to the target. Adjusting the thickness of the sabot lining helps various sizes of projectiles to fit in the barrel. The firing mechanism uses a double diaphragm method. Each diaphragm is made of very thin plastic material (Mylar). 2, record 4, English, - flight%20impact%20simulator

Principle of operation of some automatic weapons, whereby the recoil energy imparted to the barrel is used to actuate the mechanism and perform the necessary cycle of operation. Two systems of recoil operation have been in use, as follows: a. Short recoil operation. The breechblock remains locked to the barrel only while the chamber pressure is high. This involves a barrel travel of only about 1/2 inch. The device locking the breechblock to the barrel is then released and the two components separate. The barrel may remain stationary and await the return of the breechblock, but in most modern designs the barrel has its own spring and goes forward into battery, e.g. .50 calibre heavy machine-gun. b. Long recoil operation. The barrel and locked breech recoil a greater distance than the length of the cartridge. The breechblock is then held to the rear while the barrel is driven forward by its own spring. When the barrel is fully forward, it trips the catch releasing the breechblock, which then feeds the next cartridge into the chamber. Mainly encountered in semi-automatic shotguns. See also "Systems of operation - Automatic weapons". 1, record 23, English, - recoil%20operation

50. b. Fonctionnement par long recul.
