L'analyse élémentaire d’une substance permet de déterminer le poids formulaire, c'est-à-dire la somme des poids atomiques des éléments représentés par la formule la plus simple que l'on puisse lui attribuer sans tenir compte de son état moléculaire. Ainsi, l'analyse suggère que la formule la plus simple pour le benzène est CH et, par suite, que son poids formulaire est 13, 02; toutefois, on a pu établir que la molécule de benzène contient 6 atomes de carbone et 6 atomes d’hydrogène, sa formule est donc C6H6 et son poids moléculaire 78, 11.
