Le CD-Photo appartient à la famille des CD(12 cm). Il permet de stocker une centaine de photos, prises avec n’ importe quel appareil classique. Après développement et choix des tirages à stocker, ceux-ci sont numérisés par le laboratoire photo selon cinq résolutions(128 x 192 pixels, 256 x 384 pixels, 768 x 512 pixels, 1 024 x 1536 pixels ou 2 048 x 3 072 pixels). Ces cinq résolutions sont indissociables et forment un «Image Pack». Les trois premières résolutions permettent aux images d’être lues sur un lecteur grand public de type CD-I ou CD-Photo connecté au téléviseur.

A compact disc-based system compatible with CDI for storing very high resolution photographic images in digital form, so that they can be viewed on a TV set or monitor.

Kodak will push Photo CD. You'll be able to take your vacation snapshots with standard film, and the photofinisher can return not only slides or prints but a compact disc as well. Put the CD on a special $600 Kodak player (which also plays audio discs) and you can view the pictures on your TV, switching images by remote control. You can have an entire photo album - complete with your own soundtrack - on a single CD.

C'est le cas des CD-Photo, où l'utilisateur peut faire enregistrer une centaine d’images par groupe ou même unitairement, en rapportant son CD partiellement rempli pour le compléter.
