Simplement, le radar à synthèse d’ouverture(SAR) se base sur le principe que la contribution de tout objet réfléchissant est présente sur plusieurs échos radar enregistrés à des moments différents. Ainsi, au terme de l'acquisition des données par un capteur SAR, il n’ existe pas d’image proprement dite, étant entendu que l'image est constituée de pixels représentant les objets. Plutôt, le signal radar brut contient l'objet, mais il faut le reconstituer à partir du signal. Cette reconstruction de l'objet à partir d’échos correspond au processus de synthèse de l'image.
