Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The sole purpose of a cover crop is to protect the bare, erosion-prone land from the wind. They are usually seeded after the harvest of a low-residue crop such as potatoes or in the spring to protect the soil until the new crop has grown enough to provide the land. Fall rye is the most commonly-used cover crop, although other cereals such as wheat, barley, and oats are also used. 1, record 2, English, - fall%20cover%20crop

2, record 5, French, - c%C3%A9r%C3%A9ale%20de%20printemps

Growing Degree Days. The underlying idea is that development does not occur unless the temperature exceeds a certain minimum threshold value or base temperature. The base temperatures are determined through research and experimentation and are different for different organisms. It has been found that there are many other factors, which may influence the actual temperature the organism is experiencing or that may influence their growth and development. For instance it is possible that the organism may be experiencing a temperature a few degrees more or lesser than that recorded depending on weather it spends most of its time in the shade or under direct sunlight. Precipitation and the presence of weeds may also indirectly influence the growth and development of insects and plants. The fertility and nutrient content of the soil is directly related to the growth rate of insects and plants. In light of these many factors and some other scientific considerations a base temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit is considered acceptable for all plants and insects. 2, record 8, English, - growing%20degree%2Dday

Wireworms, which have a life span of up to 10 years, attack all cereal crops, particularly wheat and spring rye. They are most troublesome in light prairie soils. They may often be held in check by periodic summerfallowing and keeping fallow land clean to destroy the food supply of the long-lived larvae. For immediate and effective control, infested fields are sown with seed treated with an insecticide. 3, record 9, English, - wireworm

4, record 9, French, - larve%20de%20taupin
