Ecological regimes in a long-term perspective. Regimes did not only come into being to address interpersonal problems, but also to counter problems inherent in our relationship with the surrounding natural environment. ... In this section, I ... seek to show how that the concept of regime can successfully be used within the context of all of human history. In the first and longest stage of human development, people lived as gatherers and hunters. Their ecological regime, the ways they addressed ecological problems, was very much determined by the opportunities and limitations offered by the surrounding natural environment, by human nature, as well as by their skills. 3, record 29, English, - ecological%20regime

2, record 29, French, - r%C3%A9gime%20%C3%A9cologique

Tin Plate. ... When coated by the hot-dip process, the tin plate was termed coke tin plate or charcoal tin plate. When coated by the electrolytic process, it is termed electrolytic tin plate. ... Hot-Dipped Tin Plate. Tin plate formerly was produced by the hot-dip tinning of thin plates that had been hammered or rolled from bars of puddled iron. The pig iron used in pudding might have been made in blast furnaces using charcoal or coke as fuel. Plates made from "charcoal iron" were considered a more ductile and higher grade product; hence, tin plate made by coating charcoal-iron plates with tin (charcoal tin plate) was regarded as a product of higher quality than tin plate with a coke-iron base (coke tin plate). At present, the designation "charcoal tin plate" merely indicates plate with a relatively heavy tin coating as compared with "coke tin plate" as described below, and has no significance so far as quality of the steel base is concerned. 2, record 71, English, - charcoal%20plate

Various grades of hot-dipped tin plate were produced, the terminology indicating in a general way the weight of tin coating or, more exactly, the amount of tin used to produce the given unit or base box of plate. Coke tin plate has always designated the plate produced with the lowest amount of tin and formerly was called Cokes or Common Cokes. In ascending weight of coating, the various grades were Common Cokes, Standard Cokes, Best Cokes, and Kanners Special. Charcoal tin plate carries still heavier coatings including 1A and 2A. 2, record 71, English, - charcoal%20plate

Wood is fed continuously through a vertical cylinder into a retort. There, it undergoes three different treatments, moving slowly down to the bottom of the retort. In the first, it is dried, in the second, the charcoal process takes place, and in the third, charcoal is cooled. For the drying stage, pyroligneous gases are removed from the carbonization zone and fanned to the drying zone where they burn with a controlled supply of air. For the cooling stage, gases are removed from under the carbonization stage, where tars have been cracked, and reinjected at the bottom of the retort after having crossed a water cooled system. The sufficiently cooled charcoal is extracted from the bottom of the retort. The level of raw material inside the retort is kept at the maximum height possible. The excess of gas (50%) is generally flared off but can be directed through a by-product recovery system as for the Sific process. The process is fully automated. 1, record 93, English, - Lambiotte%20continuous%20carbonization%20process

Gasification is a thermal process to convert solid fuel into gasified fuel by non-stoichiometric, partial combustion .... The most established gasifier system is the down-draught gasifier. It produces an almost tar-free gas and can be constructed on a relatively large scale compared to other systems. Its disadvantage is the requirement for fuel preparation, which must be well cut, uniform wood or charcoal, with a moisture content not greater than 20%. 2, record 95, English, - downdraft%20gasifier

In fluidized beds and suspension gasification, there is continuous relative motion of the discrete solid particles, while in fixed bed gasifiers there is much slower stratified motion of the solid bed as a whole, generally downward by gravity. The gas can then pass either in the opposite direction to the fuel (updraft or counterflow gasifiers) ... or in the same direction (downdraft or coflow gasifiers) .... While fixed bed coal gasifiers are updraft, biomass gasifiers can be either updraft or downdraft, depending on the purpose for which the gas is to be used. Updraft gasifiers can use very wet wood, but because the pyrolysis products are immediately cooled, the gas contains up to 30% of tar and oil. 1, record 96, English, - updraft%20gasifier

2, record 97, French, - distillation%20du%20bois
