A coal lithotype appearing as stratifications parallel to the bedding plane and usually having a silky luster and scattered or diffuse reflection.

CONT

The brightest layers are composed chiefly of the maceral vitrinite and the duller layers of the other maceral groups exinite and inertinite. Clarain exhibits a silky lustre less brilliant than that of vitrain. It seems to have originated under conditions that alternated between those in which durain and vitrain were formed.

Le clarain, constituant le plus fréquent des charbons, est fait de bandes brillantes et mates, finement interstratifiées, dont l’épaisseur est inférieure à 3 mm. Ce sont des corps figurés tels que spores et fragments de cuticules et de feuilles emballés dans un ciment amorphe (vitrinite).

OBS

Le clarain est l’élément le plus abondant des charbons humiques.
