Serious disadvantages of the precipitation method of separating plutonium from solutions and purifying it are: the large number of batch operations, the considerable amount of solid waste subject to removal, the incompleteness of the "uranium regeneration" and the comparatively low recovery of plutonium[.] Extraction methods, permitting complete separation of plutonium from solution, fairly complete "regeneration of uranium" and its accurate purification from fission products do not have these disadvantages. 1, record 9, English, - uranium%20regeneration

2, record 18, French, - r%C3%A9acteur%20%C3%A0%20haute%20temp%C3%A9rature%20refroidi%20par%20gaz

Radiation damage in solids … Because the particles … have different energies and different ranges, the distance from the site of formation to the region where they cause damage is different. Thus, the size of the fissile kernels itself (also called inclusions) embedded in the inert matrix material becomes an important factor in determining the regions of damage in a material. To this end a distinction is made between a microdispersed and a macrodispersed fuel. A fuel is called microdispersed if the size of the fissile inclusions is less than 10 [micrometers], and otherwise is called macrodispersed. Microdispersed fuels can be produced either by infiltration or by compression of a mixture of matrix grains and fissile grains, while macrodispersed fuels can be produced by compression only. The damage effects in microdispersed fuels will approach those in a solid solution, while the radiation effects in macrodispersed fuels will mainly occur in the inclusions themselves and in a thin matrix layer around the inclusion, predominantly due to neutron damage. 1, record 65, English, - microdispersed%20fuel

All used nuclear fuel in Canada is currently held on site in interim storage facilities, which are safe, secure and environmentally sound. Interim storage of used nuclear fuel at a nuclear facility typically consists of two phases known as wet storage and dry storage. Initially, used nuclear fuel bundles are stored under water in bays or pools after they have been removed from the reactors. These reinforced, leak-proof facilities enable the fuel to cool off in a shielded and secure facility. After 6 to 10 years in wet storage, the used nuclear fuel can be safely transferred to dry storage in concrete canisters, containers or silos. 1, record 75, English, - dry%20storage

1, record 77, English, - macrodispersed%20fuel

Any used fuel will still contain some of the original U-235 as well as various plutonium isotopes which have been formed inside the reactor core, and the U-238. In total these account for some 96% of the original uranium and over half of the original energy content (ignoring U-238). Reprocessing, undertaken in Europe and Russia, separates this uranium and plutonium from the wastes so that they can be recycled for re-use in a nuclear reactor as a mixed oxide (MOX) fuel. 1, record 83, French, - cycle%20du%20combustible%20ferm%C3%A9

Fast reactors can be operated in a "burner" mode ... Such reactors can "store" temporarily large quantities of plutonium as fuel in their cores, and, in the event that nuclear fission has to be replaced one day by better sources of concentrated energy, they can dispose of, or "burn," inventories of plutonium and actinides. ZEEP (Zero Energy Experimental Pile). In 1945, this 10-watt research reactor achieved the first controlled nuclear chain reaction outside the United States. Built at AECL's laboratories at Chalk River, Ontario, it also provided valuable information on the characteristics of heavy-water-moderated fuel lattices for the reactors to come, including early CANDU commercial power reactors. ZEEP was retired from service in 1970. 2, record 96, English, - ZEEP%20research%20reactor
