A long steel bolt driven into walls or roof off underground excavations to strengthen the pinning of rock strata. It is inserted in a drilled hole and expanded by means of a wedge which opens a sleeve surrounding it (the sleeve bolt), or which slides in a half-sleeve (the sliding wedge bolt).

... the pinning together of the material adjacent to a mine opening by drilling a hole 5 to 6 feet deep and inserting a special bolt 1 to [1 3/4] in. in diameter.

OBS

The end inserted in the hole is equipped with a wedge or expansion shell that seizes the material at the bottom of the hole. A heavy washer or plate is placed over the exposed and threaded end of the bolt, and the nut is tightened to a unit of support.

It is usually measured by resting the butt flat on the floor, with the receiver against the wall, and measuring the distance between the wall and the edge of the muzzle. Pitch down varies according to stock pitch.

Smoking is a cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which can result in the need for lung transplantation. The Office of Tobacco Reduction Programs, Health Promotion and Programs Branch, is the focal point in Health Canada for activity including public education initiatives aimed at reducing tobacco use and smoking prevalence. In support of this work, the Minister of Health announced in May 1999 the creation of an Expert Committee on Nicotine and Tobacco Science, which will provide guidance and advice to Health Canada in developing strategies to reduce tobacco consumption and its accompanying adverse health effects.
