Squat refers to the increase of a ship's draught as a result of its motion through water. It is a hydraulic phenomenon whereby the water displaced creates an increase in current velocity past the moving hull causing a reduction in pressure resulting in a localised reduction of the water level and, consequently, in a settling of the vessel deeper in the water. For various reasons-having to do with hull design, trim and other physical and operational factors-squat may be different at the fore and aft.

Le squat est l'augmentation du tirant d’eau d’un navire résultant du déplacement de celui-ci dans l'eau. Il s’agit d’un phénomène hydraulique par lequel l'eau déplacée crée une augmentation de la vitesse du courant le long de la coque en mouvement, causant ainsi une réduction de pression qui, à son tour, a pour effet de produire une baisse locale du niveau d’eau, permettant au navire de s’enfoncer plus profondément dans l'eau.

Mobile drilling platform. The underwater search has been made possible only by vast improvement in offshore technology ... new types [of platform] stress characteristics of mobility and the capacity for work in [deep] water. The world's mobile platform fleet can be divided into four main groupings: self-elevating platform, submersibles, semisubmersibles, and floating drill ships. The most widely used mobile platform is the self-elevating, or jack-up unit. It is towed to location, where the legs are lowered to the sea floor, and the platform is jacked up above wave height.

Magnetohydrodynamic instability which sometimes develops in a thin plasma column carrying a strong axial current such that, if a kink begins to develop in such a column, the magnetic forces on the inside of the kink become larger than those on the outside, so that in general it tends to grow in size and the column then becomes unstable and undergoes a gross lateral displacement toward the walls of the discharge vessel.
