English

Subject field(s)
  • Racquet Sports
DEF

The result of hitting the tennis ball with a tennis racquet; sometimes refers to the actual placement of the ball or manner in which it is struck.

CONT

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used.

OBS

"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect].

OBS

Related terms: touch shot, finesse shot. Strictly speaking there is an important distinction to be made between a "touch shot" and a "finesse shot", terms quite often used synonymously. A "touch shot" requires a delicate "touch" of the hands to execute shots such as a "drop volley" or a "lob volley", whereas the broader term "finesse shot" implies any shot that requires much agility and nimbleness on the part of the player. Examples: drop shot, topspin lob, etc.

Record 6 1994-06-15

English

Subject field(s)
  • Artificial Intelligence
CONT

The representation of domain expertise in a computer can be in one of two forms. One form is as a "glass-box" or articulate model ... The model is referred to as "articulate" because each problem-solving decision it makes can ... be explained in terms that match ... those of a human problem-solver. In contrast to the articulate expert is the "black-box" expert, which has data structures and processing algorithms that do not mimic those used by human beings.

CONT

... the circuit simulator underlying SOPHIE-1 ... is a black-box expert, and is used only to check the consistency of student's hypotheses and answer some of his questions. Its mechanisms are never revealed to the student since they are certainly not the mechanisms the student is expected to acquire.

CONT

Although there are some excellent chess machines, they rely on nonhuman strategies for achieving their expertise, that is, they are black-box experts.

OBS

Expert modules can be classified along a spectrum ranging from completely opaque or "black-box" representations, whereby only final results are available, to fully transparent or "glass-box" ones, whereby each reasoning step can be inspected and interpreted.

OBS

As opposed to "glass-box expert system."

French

Domaine(s)
  • Intelligence artificielle
DEF

Système expert qui fait abstraction de toutes les étapes de résolution d’un problème pour ne présenter que les résultats, éliminant du même coup les possibilités de vérification et d’interprétation.

OBS

S’oppose à «système expert transparent».
