Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
On approaching a merchant ship for the purpose of visit, the commander of the visiting cruiser must summon her to stop. This signal may be given in different ways; the older method was by the warship hoisting her flag and pennant and firing a blank shot ..., which is still called "the affirming gun" .... 2, record 1, English, - warning%20shot
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Prior to 1914, visit and search took place at sea at the place where the apparently neutral merchant vessel was stopped. The procedure was a simple one, the belligerent war vessel issuing a summons by cannon shot that commanded the merchant vessel to "leave to" so that the belligerent officer and accompanying men could come on board to visit, and if need be, to search. 3, record 1, English, - warning%20shot

Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Admiral Fitzroy's (English) storm signal [1864] consists of a hollow cylinder and cone, either of which, or both simultaneously, may be suspended from a mast or staff so as to be visible to ships in port or in a roadstead. Their positions and grouping denote the probable direction of the wind in an approaching storm. Thus: cone point upward to the right of the staff = northerly gale; cone point downward to the left of the staff = southerly gale; cylinder above = expect dangerous winds from both quarters successively; upright cone above cylinder = Dangerous wind expected from the north; reversed cone below cylinder = dangerous wind expected from the south; and so on. 2, record 3, English, - gale%20cone

4, record 5, French, - d%C3%A9ferlement
