L’horizon artificiel et le conservateur de cap sont basés sur l’immobilité dans l’espace d’un gyroscope. Du fait qu’un gyroscope résiste au renversement, il fait office de référence stable par rapport à l’horizon réel ou à une direction spécifique. 2, record 9, French, - culbutage
Record number: 9, Textual support number: 1 OBS
2, record 9, French, - culbutage

"Smooth" positive-G acro (no snap or tumbing maneuvers) shouldn't hurt these gyros if they are powered down even if they are not caged. ... When you subject that spinning gyro to your aircraft's twists and turns during aerobatics you are imparting more force on its bearings than you would were the gyro turned off and not spinning. It is usually bearing wear the trashes a gyro. This problem is especially severe when you are doing advanced aerobatics. It is really hard on the gyro bearings. I would rather have the gyros turned off to make them last longer. That we have caged or uncaged gyros is really irrelevant to the basic physics involved. 1, record 10, English, - uncaged

A bearing is a relatively inexpensive replaceable wear surface, which reduces friction between rotating shafts and fixed housings. The intent is for bearings to protect more expensive parts, of an engine such as the crankshaft and camshaft as well as the engine block and connecting rods. In addition, bearings must also support the moving parts. This requires that bearings be capable of withstanding very high loads which are constantly changing in magnitude and direction. These are commonly referred to as cyclic loads which may eventually result in bearing lining fatigue or flaking if the bearing material does not have adequate fatigue strength. 2, record 29, English, - main%20bearing%20lining

Ceramic bearings are attractive for use in gas-turbine engines because ceramics generally retain their strengths and resistances to corrosion over a range of temperatures much greater than that of typical steels used in rolling-element bearings. Bearing alloys ... are used for metals that encounter sliding contact under pressure with another surface; the steel of a rotating shaft is a common example. Most bearing alloys contain particles of a hard intermetallic compound that resist wear. These particles, however, are embedded in a matrix of softer material which adjusts to the hard particles so that the shaft is uniformly loaded over the total surface. 2, record 75, English, - bearing%20alloy

A more sophisticated type of (rock bolt) tension indicator is the compression pad. This consists of a rubber disk sandwiched between two steel plate washers. The assemblage is installed in the manner of a bearing plate on the bolt. The amount by which the rubber disk extrudes around the periphery is proportional to the tension in the roof bolt and may be measured with a circular steel band which is graduated to read directly in pounds. 2, record 95, English, - compression%20pad
