Mineur continu. En Amérique, les constructeurs ont mis au point pour les houillères des mineurs continus, lourdes abatteuses-chargeuses sur chenilles adaptées aux chantiers classiques de 5 à 9 m de large. Le principe général en est d’attaquer le front par des rotors garnis de pics, les fragments abattus étant ramenés sur un convoyeur central qui les évacue à l’arrière, où ils tombent dans l’engin de transport; la machine avance sur ses chenilles au fur et à mesure de l’abattage.

La société Pioneer Coal Limited extrait du charbon de la couche Foord à la mine Stellarton à l’aide d’un mineur en continu, le NovaMiner 2000. La machine conçue, brevetée et construite par cette société est capable d’extraire du charbon de couches ayant une inclinaison de plus de 25 degrés par rapport à la paroi.

Pour les galeries [à l'intérieur d’un réseau karstique] on a coutume de distinguer deux types principaux de sections, celui que l'on considère comme caractéristique d’un creusement «en conduite forcée» et celui qui serait dû à un «écoulement libre». Dans les terrains subhorizontaux, le premier, de forme circulaire ou ovale, prend son point de départ dans une diaclase(ellipse à grand axe subvertical) ou plus fréquemment dans un joint(ellipse à grand axe subhorizontal). Si cette disposition n’ est bien réalisée originellement, qu'avec l'occupation intégrale de la galerie par l'eau sous pression, la réciproque n’ est pas exacte. Les explorateurs en scaphandre autonome ont en effet démontré qu'il existe des galeries en conduite forcée(et qui paraissent l'avoir toujours été) dont les parois sont extraordinairement déchiquetées, anguleuses et irrégulières.

... Alimak raise climber. ... Alimak machines are in operation throughout the world, developing ore passes, ventilation shafts, main shafts, and others, at various inclinations and lengths. Climbers may be air driven, electric driven, or most recently, diesel/hydraulic driven. The raise climber consists of a cage for the crew, with a working platform on top for roof scaling and drilling and charging of holes. The machine, equipped with rack-and-pinion drive, travels along a guide rail and monorail with pinion rack, which are bolted to the hangingwall by expansion bolts. The guide rail is built up in sections and includes pipes for supplying air and water to drills and for ventilation of explosive gases following blasting.

L'«Alimak» est une cabine qui grimpe dans le montage sur une crémaillère. Cette cabine est équipée pour permettre la foration et le minage dans le montage. Au moment du tir, la cabine est redescendue et effacée dans la galerie inférieure. Les matériaux abattus tombent spontanément dans cette galerie et la cabine peut remonter pendant que les déblais sont chargés. Cette technique est une amélioration remarquable de la méthode de creusement traditionnelle qui nécessitait des échelles et un plancher de travail qu'il fallait reconstruire après chaque tir.
