In the most common type of high temperature reactor (HTR) fuel, tiny particles of nuclear fuel are coated with three or four layers of coatings which are impenetrable to fission products up to a temperature of 2000 celsius. About 20,000 particles, bonded with graphite are massed together to form a spherical fuel element with a diameter of about 6 centimeters. The high temperature reactor ... might contain 100,000 or more of these fuel elements.

The pebbles are ... designed to passively limit the amount of heat unleashed by the nuclear fission reactions that drive the reactor. The fissionable material is divided into groups of 100 million billion uranium-235 atoms scattered within a 0.5 mm sphere of uranium dioxide. That core is coated with four containment layers. ... Some 15,000 carbon-coated uranium dioxide kernels, looking like nuclear poppy seeds, are embedded in a tennis ball-size graphite and resin matrix. Graphite acts to slow the fission neutrons and so acts as an embedded moderator. The matrix is then encased in a 5 mm pure carbon shell, sintered, annealed, and machined to a uniform diameter of 6 cm.

Une espèce, Armilariella mellea ou Armillaire, cause le Pourridié-Agaric. L'Armillaire vit généralement en saprophyte sur les souches mortes. Il peut devenir parasite en s’attaquent aux racines des arbres forestiers, feuillus et résineux, des arbres fruitiers, de la Vigne, et même de la Rhubarbe. Les arbres atteints dépérissent et meurent plus ou moins rapidement, souvent au printemps peu après le débourrement. Les racines atteintes pourrissent; lorsqu'on les écorce, on constate des lames mycéliennes blanches ou jaunâtres, disposées en éventail. Par ailleurs, le champignon forme des cordonnets noirâtres(rhizomorphes) de 3-4 millimètres de diamètre, qui lui permettent de cheminer dans le sol.

Staking and Guying. Most shrubs and many trees installed in landscapes do not require support from stakes or guy wires following planting. Their trunks are strong enough to hold them upright and they are relatively small so wind will not blow them over. There are 3 reasons to stake or install guy wires on plants: 1) to protect the tree from mechanical injury; 2) to support the trunk in an upright position and 3) to anchor the tree to stabilize it against wind. Determine why staking or guying is necessary before choosing materials.

The merchantable bole is the only portion of the tree removed from the forest during commercial logging operations. The tops, branches and stump-root system are not removed during harvesting.

In terms of tree components, the greatest quantity of forest biomass is in the merchantable stem wood (49%), followed by branches (11%). The percentages vary somewhat among the species groups: hemlock, cedar and Douglas-fir (predominantly west coast species) have proportionally more merchantable stem wood biomass than spruce, pine, and fir; this is at least partly due to the larger average tree size.

Most large trees and shrubs require support staking or guying to hold them erect against buffeting winds. Wood or metal stakes are usual for single-trunked trees up to 3 inches in caliper and provide better support if used in pairs. Guy wiring with turnbuckles is used for anchoring large plant materials .... All wiring should be shielded with either rubber or plastic hosing buffers where it contacts the stems to avoid bark damage and the creation of an entryway for insects and diseases into the trunk.
