La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) define el diagnóstico prenatal como la detección de cualquier defecto congénito del feto es decir, "cualquier anomalía en el desarrollo morfológico, estructural, funcional o molecular presente al nacer (aunque pueda manifestarse más tarde) externa o interna, familiar o esporádica, hereditaria o no y única o múltiple". El diagnóstico prenatal engloba todas aquellas acciones médicas (pruebas y análisis) que tienen como fin diagnosticar antes del parto cualquier anomalía congénita. Por extensión, suele incluirse su posible prevención y tratamiento.
