DRUMLINS [8 records]

Record 1 2024-11-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geomorphology and Geomorphogeny
  • Glaciology
DEF

A landscape characterized by swarms of closely spaced drumlins, distributed more or less an echelon, and commonly separated by small marshy tracts.

CONT

Review of published descriptions of drumlin fields suggests that the following conditions are important to drumlin growth: (1) compressive longitudinal and possibly extending transverse strain rates in the ice, (2) thin ice such as occurs near the glacier margin, and (3) high pore-water pressure in the subglacial sediments.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Géomorphologie et géomorphogénie
  • Glaciologie
CONT

Record 4 2008-09-22

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geomorphology and Geomorphogeny
DEF

A polygon outlined by sand wedges underlying its boundaries.

CONT

Sand-wedge polygons (tesselations) in the McMurdo Sound region, Antarctica...- A microrelief pattern of polygons 20 to 40 feet in diameter occurs in the perennially frozen ground of the glacierfree lowlands of the McMurdo Sound region ... They are similar to ice-wedge polygons in the Arctic except that they are in ground devoid of vegetation and are outlined by textural changes in the soil between the inter-polygonal furrow and the enclosed polygonal areas. The term 'sand wedge' polygon is here proposed for this widespread phenomenon. ... Suggested origin of the polygons and sand wedges is similar to the origin of foliated ice wedges and polygons in the Arctic.

CONT

Much of the surface in the area now occupied by McMurdo Station was originally covered by sand-wedge polygons, which are ubiquitous periglacial features across the ice-free lowlands of McMurdo Sound.

OBS

sand wedge polygon: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

Record 5 2004-05-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geomorphology and Geomorphogeny
DEF

A thick sheet of till forming an undulating surface of low relief and deposited when the morainic debris carried in the base of an ice-sheet or glacier is released during a phase of melting. It tends to obscure former solid rock features.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Géomorphologie et géomorphogénie
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geomorphology and Geomorphogeny
  • Glaciology
DEF

A low, smoothly rounded, elongate hill of compact glacial till, or rarely other kinds of drift, built under the margin of the ice and shaped by its flow, or carved out of an older moraine by readvancing ice; its longer axis is parallel to the direction of movement of the ice. It usually has a blunt nose pointing in the direction from which the ice approached, and a gentler slope tapering in the other direction.

DEF
