L'Avis Technique est établi à la demande du fabricant ou de l'importateur(le «demandeur») lorsque la technique ou le produit concerné est trop récent ou trop innovant pour avoir fait l'objet d’une normalisation, ou être intégré dans un Document Technique Unifié(DTU).

Ne pas confondre l’Avis Technique avec ce qu’était l’ancien «Agrément du CSTB» [Centre scientifique et technique du bâtiment], supprimé en 1969 : le fait qu’un produit ou procédé bénéficie d’un Avis Technique ne saurait constituer en soi un label de qualité, et l’Avis comporte souvent des restrictions et/ou des recommandations importantes; ou encore être, par exemple, un «avis révisé».

Interrupteur de manque d’eau. - Chaque chaudière doit être équipée d’un dispositif de manque d’eau dont le rôle est de couper immédiatement le brûleur s’il en était ainsi. Ce dispositif déclenche souvent simultanément un signal acoustique ou optique. L’effet de coupure résulte de l’action d’un aimant permanent séparé par une mince cloison amagnétique d’un second aimant qui actionne le levier du dispositif interrupteur.

Ce dispositif est imposé par le DTU 65. 11 «Dispositifs de sécurité des installations de chauffage central concernant le bâtiment».
