Dans «Noms et lieux du Québec», 1994, page 266, la Commission de toponymie explique l'origine des noms des «municipalités d’Halifax-Nord et d’Halifax-Sud», du «canton d’Halifax», de la «municipalité du canton d’Halifax-Nord», de la «paroisse de Saint-Ferdinand-d’Halifax» et d’«un bureau de poste répondant au nom d’Halifax» comme pouvant «commémorer George Montagu Dunk, second comte de Halifax(1716-1771), qui s’est activement occupé de commerce avec l'Amérique».
