Beginning in 2000, a group of concerned citizens met regularly to discuss models of protection for the Ottawa River. In 2001, they formed a board of directors and started Ottawa Riverkeeper, the third waterkeeper program in Canada to be licensed by the international Waterkeeper Alliance. ... The citizen-based Ottawa Riverkeeper is the voice that works to protect and enhance the ecological health and integrity of the Ottawa River system. Through expert, independent action Ottawa Riverkeeper encourages responsible decision-making, public education and participation, and compliance with existing protection regulations throughout the watershed. Ottawa Riverkeeper is an independent science-based organization concerned first and foremost with the protection of the Ottawa River's ecological integrity.
