DURCISSANT EAU [4 records]

Record 1 2014-04-10

English

Subject field(s)
  • Binders and Mastics (Constr.)
  • Masonry Materials
  • Waste Management
  • Nuclear Waste Materials
CONT

Cementitious materials include the variety of ceramic products that may be mixed with water or another liquid to form a paste. The paste, which is temporarily plastic, can be molded and may or may not have aggregate added to it. Later, it hardens or sets to a rigid mass. The simple cementing materials, such as limes and plasters, are produced by driving off a liquid or gas from some natural mineral. ... The more complex hydraulic cements derive their cementing properties from formation of new chemical compounds during the manufacturing process.

CONT

The NRC has reviewed a number of alternative [radioactive waste] disposal methods and concluded that it will focus its efforts on concepts that utilize cementitious materials with earthen covers and that only minimal effort will be spent on aboveground vaults or mined caverns.

OBS

A few bilingual dictionaries (cf. INDUS 1986 and LEBAT 1971) give "hydraulic binder" as the English equivalent of the French term "liant hydraulique," but this is contrary to current English usage.

OBS

"cementitious": of the nature of cement.

Key term(s)
  • hydraulic binder

French

Domaine(s)
  • Liants et mastics (Construction)
  • Matériaux de maçonnerie
  • Gestion des déchets
  • Déchets nucléaires
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Petrography
  • Refractory Materials (Metallurgy)
DEF

A widely distributed colloidal lusterless earthy substance, plastic when moist but permanently hard when fired, that is composed primarily of decomposed igneous and metamorphic rocks rich in the mineral feldspar in the form of crystalline grains less than .002 mm in diameter, whose essential constituents are kaolinite and other hydrous aluminous minerals and fine particles, and that is used widely in the manufacture of such articles as porcelain, building blocks, sewer pipe, tile, and earthenware or in its raw form in paper manufacture, filtration, and oil refining.

CONT

... the United States is proposing burying their nuclear waste in volcanic tuff, Germany is focusing on salt, France is considering burial in shale or clay, and others have investigated disposal under the ocean floor.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pétrographie
  • Matériaux réfractaires (Métallurgie)
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Concrete Construction
CONT

A practical mix-design method is derived, to determine a high strength concrete composition having certain specifications. In this method, it is assumed that the optimal concrete will have a low binding paste and a high admixture content.

CONT

It is assumed in this approach that the optimum concrete has a low content of binding paste and a high proportion of super-plasticizer.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Bétonnage
CONT
