One approach to dealing with risky or uncertain outcomes is to adopt some arbitrary cut-off (or pay-back) period. In the case of extremely risky projects the cut-off period might be as short as two or three years; in other cases it might be as long as thirty to fifty years. This strategy toward handling risk or uncertainty would result in the adoption of only those projects capable of generating (discounted) benefits prior to the cut-off sufficient to more than cover (discounted) project costs. 2, record 7, English, - cut%2Doff%20period

"Voluntary" unemployment: This is a term associated with certain right-wing economists who believe that very little unemployment is involuntary, in that unemployed individuals have no choice in the matter of their employment status. The concept of voluntary unemployment implies that individuals choose to be unemployed - and claim benefit - rather than accept work where pay may be close to benefit level. 1, record 13, English, - voluntary%20unemployment

1, record 13, French, - ch%C3%B4mage%20volontaire

Carbon-14 Method. Radiocarbon dating techniques, first developed by the American chemist Willard F. Libby and his associates at the University of Chicago in 1947, are frequently useful in unravelling time-related problems in archaeology, anthropology, oceanography, pedology, climatology, and recent geology. Through metabolic activity, the level of carbon-14 in a living organism remains in constant balance with the level in the atmosphere or some other portion of the earth's dynamic reservoir, such as the ocean. Upon the organism's death, carbon-14 begins to disintegrate at a known rate, and no further replacement of carbon from atmospheric carbon dioxide can take place. The rapid disintegration of carbon-14 generally limits the dating period to approximately 50,000 years, although the method is sometimes extended to 70,000 years. Uncertainty in measurement increases with the age of the sample. Carbon dating works well on organic specimens such as wood, bone and cloth that are between 2 000 and 20 000 years old. 2, record 16, English, - carbon%2D14%20method

1, record 24, French, - Programme%20d%26rsquo%3BAppels%20T%C3%A9l%C3%A9phoniques
