Cette exposition est correctement révélée, estime-t-on, par la présence d’ombres portées nettement dessinées : on considère alors que la production de telles ombres est possible lorsque l’éclairement de l’objet par le Soleil a une valeur au moins égale à 120 watts par mètre carré, ce qui permet de déterminer à chaque instant s’il y a ou non insolation.

On emploie couramment la locution «durée d’insolation» pour désigner la somme des intervalles de temps durant lesquels un objet fixe est soumis à insolation au cours d’une période donnée que l'on choisit, sauf indication contraire, comme égalant un jour entier, soit 24 heures à partir de minuit [...] la mesure de cette durée représente par définition l'ensoleillement du site au lieu et au jour considérés; il est ainsi extrêmement fréquent que l'on confonde les expressions «ensoleillement» et «durée d’insolation», voire «insolation».

OBS

Il faut noter aussi que le terme d’insolation est parfois employé comme simple synonyme de l’éclairement d’une surface horizontale par le rayonnement solaire.

Percentage of possible sunshine. The percentage of sun is the daily amount of sunshine divided by the total available at the site. So, for a winter day with 8 hours of sunshine available that had 6 hours of sunshine, the percentage would be 75%. For a summer day with 8 hours of sunshine out of 16 possible, the percentage would be 50. This number is averaged for all years available which is either none or the years 1984-1990.
