The primary aims for human-rated launchers are to carry the astronauts safely to their destination, and back again to Earth. ... These are quite different requirements from those for an unmanned spacecraft launch system. Except in a very few cases, for these there is no need to bring the spacecraft back to Earth, and the consequences of an accident, while expensive, are not tragic. Historically the requirements for human rating were not specific. Basically, a human-rated launcher had to be demonstrated to be reliable, usually by several unmanned flights, during which all the systems on which the survival of the crew depended were tested, and found to work successfully.

BepiColombo montrera la première couverture globale 3D de Mercure et les premières images en infrarouge thermique pour déterminer la composition de surface et des cartes de températures.

La mission BepiColombo s’articule autour de 2 orbiteurs aux objectifs différents : L'orbiteur planétaire ou MPO1 est dédié à l'étude de la surface et de la composition de Mercure. Il sera placé sur une orbite basse circulaire polaire. L'ESA en est responsable. L'orbiteur magnétosphérique ou MMO2 étudiera le champ magnétique et la magnétosphère de Mercure depuis une orbite elliptique inclinée. Cet orbiteur est sous la responsabilité de la Jaxa3. Ces 2 orbiteurs seront lancés conjointement par un Soyouz depuis le Centre spatial guyanais en 2013. Ils arriveront dans l'environnement de Mercure 6 ans plus tard en 2019 et se sépareront pour mener leurs missions respectives d’une durée nominale d’un an.

The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) will collect these important data during an 11-day space shuttle mission in 1999. The mission is a partnership between NASA and the Department of Defense's National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA).
