Le concept de doublet géothermique suppose qu'une distance minimale soit respectée entre puits de production et puits d’injection afin d’éviter tout refroidissement avant un délai prévu. En effet, le fluide géothermal refroidi après qu'il ait cédé ses calories au réseau de surface dans l'échangeur, crée autour du puits d’injection un front thermique froid qui s’étend au cours du temps et finit par atteindre le puits de production. La durée entre la mise en production et l'arrivée du premier effet thermique est appelée «durée de vie» du doublet.
